There are a number of hazards which present themselves to
the purse
seiner but, foul weather, shallow water and strong tides only represent
the tip of the iceberg. The true dangers of seining are found in more
unexpected places. | |

Eating bacon for three meals a day can do a lot more damage than a swinging double block. This applies not only to your body, but to the "head" (sometimes referred to as the grinder). If your cook is trying to kill you by means of bacon, it may mean that he/she is sick of cleaning up fish slime, but more likely it's because seiner cooks like salty fat. |

The saying, "It Makes A Turd" takes on great significance on a Seiner. If someone asks "How was dinner tonight?," the appropriate response is not "scrumptious," "not bad," or "delectable." An exhausted crew member is more apt to say "Fills a hole," "Takes up space," or the above mentioned "Makes a Turd." This isn't simply due to bad food, but also because crew members don't use words like "scrumptious." In fact, they rarely use words. Note: This has nothing to do with danger, but it goes with the cooking thing above. |
